On June 13, the Stephen Foster Drama Association will continue its tradition of hosting a distinctive and inclusive performance of “The Stephen Foster Story” specifically tailored for children and adults with exceptional needs. Thanks to the generous support of LG&E and KU, this special showing is offered free of charge and creates an opportunity for attendees, along with their families, caregivers and support community, to experience the show in a safe and accommodating setting.
Traditionally, Lights Up! takes place during the final dress rehearsal of the show, just before opening night. Now in its seventh year, the event will commence at 6:30 p.m. with pre-show activities, leading up to the performance at 8 p.m.
“Theater is something that everyone should be able to enjoy,” said Johnny Warren, Executive Artistic Director for The Stephen Foster Story and the Stephen Foster Drama Association. “With the help of our sponsors LG&E and KU, we are able to provide an accommodating environment for all of our guests with exceptional needs to enjoy a beautiful and professional performance.”
LG&E and KU generously host pre-performance activities for attendees of the event. This year, attendees will enjoy pre-show activities, demonstrations and treats.
“The Stephen Foster Story” has been delighting audiences at the J. Dan Talbott Amphitheatre since 1959. The show is set in the mid-19th century and follows America’s first great composer, Stephen Collins Foster. Featuring over 50 of Foster’s greatest compositions such as “Oh! Susanna,” “Camptown Races,” “Beautiful Dreamer,” “Hard Times (Come Again No More),” and Kentucky’s state song, “My Old Kentucky Home,” The Stephen Foster Story captures the essence of a bygone era through song, dance, breathtaking costumes and the picture-perfect setting of My Old Kentucky Home State Park.
